Conference on Relevant Higher Education Curricula for Muslims in the Philippines

WISHES recently co-sponsored with the Commission on Higher Education - ARMM, Philippine Muslim Teachers (PMTC) and King Faisal Center for Islamic, Arabic & Asian Studies (KFCIAAS) the “All Lanao Educators Conference on Relevant Higher Education Curricula for Muslims in the Philippines”, held at Mindanao State University Mamitua Saber Research Center on August 16, 2007.  The conference adopted unanimously the curriculum presented by Dr Norlain Dindang, WISHES Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The delegates – most of them presidents or heads of colleges and higher institutions in the Lanao areas – formed the Muslim Educators and Researchers Federation of Asia (MERFA). This was, in fact, one of the key action items proposed by Dr Dindang.

WISHES presented a paper on “The Need for Change, Knowledge Management, Networking and Planning for Relevant Higher Education Curricula for Muslims in the Philippines”.  The presentation was well received by the conference delegates, including Dr Ahmad Alonto Jr, the former President of Mindanao State University.

Acceptance Speech by HRH Prince Alwaleed

I wish to thank Your Excellency, Dr. Norma Sharief, for those kind remarks, and for coming with such a distinguished delegation all the way from Mindanao to bestow upon me this great honor. I would also like to thank His Excellency Ambassador Antonio Vilamor for being here to witness this event.

As all of you know, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines have enjoyed very close ties, stretching back for decades. Millions of Philippine workers have come and worked in Saudi Arabia, and in so doing they have made a significant contribution to the development of its economy and to the well-being of its citizens. Indeed, their skills have been vital to the many development projects, public and private, on which Saudi Arabia has embarked. Likewise, the financial remittances that they have sent home from Saudi Arabia have played an important role in the Philippines' drive to boost investments and to bring in hard currencies.
